SFDA and Saudi NIH Launch Five Initiatives to Advance Clinical Trials and Accelerate Innovative Medicines Development in Saudi Arabia
H.E. Dr. Hisham S. Aljadhey, CEO of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), launched a number of strategic initiatives in clinical trials in partnership with the Saudi National Institute of Health (Saudi NIH). The launch took place during a ceremony held at SFDA headquarters in Riyadh, attended by the CEO of the Saudi NIH, Prof. Fars Alanazi, along with representatives from various health authorities and research centers.
These initiatives stem from the ongoing collaboration between the two entities, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the clinical trials ecosystem and fostering an attractive and enabling regulatory and research environment that supports the growth and sustainability of the Kingdom's health sector.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Aljadhey highlighted the strategic partnership between the SFDA, the Saudi NIH, and stakeholders across the health sector, noting its role in driving a significant increase in clinical trials conducted in the Kingdom. He emphasized that the newly launched initiatives serve as a vital cornerstone for the sector's continued growth and will amplify its impact on the national health system.
Dr. Aljadhey also pointed out the importance of integrating efforts to achieve strategic objectives in research and innovation, contributing to the prosperity of the pharmaceutical industry and accelerating access to innovative treatments for patients.
For his part, Prof. Alanazi commended the rapid growth of Saudi Arabia’s research and innovation ecosystem, particularly in clinical trials. He emphasized that the effective partnership with the SFDA and relevant stakeholders has helped strengthen the health research environment, empowering the research sector and national talent to actively contribute to this growing field, advance the clinical trials ecosystem, and strengthen the Kingdom’s position in this area.
The ceremony marked the official launch of five key initiatives in clinical trials, including Clinical Trials Agreement Reference Model Initiative; Guideline for Establishing Clinical Trial Units Initiative; Profile for Hospitals and Research Centers Specialized in Clinical Trials Initiative; Clinical Trials Reliance Pathway Initiative; and RAID Pathway to Support the Registration of Innovative Investigational Medicines Initiative.
Through these initiatives, SFDA and Saudi NIH aim to strengthen clinical trials infrastructure, create an attractive and enabling regulatory environment, and accelerate the conduct of clinical trials. Furthermore, the initiatives seek to develop regulatory and legislative frameworks that foster innovation and expedite the development of modern medicines and treatments in accordance with the highest international standards.
These initiatives represent a milestone in the collaboration between the SFDA and the Saudi NIH, achieving shared strategic goals, fostering the growth of the health research sector, and supporting the Kingdom’s drive toward a knowledge-based economy in alignment with the Health Sector Transformation Program, a key component of Saudi Vision 2030.
